[Article Translation] Another woman comes out and accuses actor Cho Jae Hyun of sexual assault

It appears like actor Cho Jae Hyun's #MeToo disclosures haven't ended. The accusations began since last February and another accusation of sexual assault has appeared. Korean-Japanese actress A (42 years old) is claiming that Cho Jae Hyun sexually assaulted her at a public broadcast station's restroom 16 years ago.

The first time A met Cho Jae Hyun was at a drama's filming location in 2001. To A, Cho Jae Hyun was just another acting sunbae (senior).

Q. At the time, were you personally close to Cho Jae Hyun?
  • No. I never met Cho Jae Hyun in private/personally. Why would I meet a married man who has two kids.

Q. But how did that incident come to happen?
  • Cho Jae Hyun was a sunbae (senior) who would talk to me on the filming set. There were times where I would feel weird because sometimes he would excessively make physical contact but in the Japanese culture, it's difficult for you to directly say, "Don't do this". Besides, he would sometimes behave like that towards his coordinators so I thought, 'Ah, in Korea, they must be like that with people they're close too'.

Q. But how did that incident happen?
  • It was the day where I was taking a commemorative picture with the actors and staff at the hallway of the broadcast station's waiting room. I remember it being around May of 2002. I was taking pictures with seniors I was close to and we had put our arms around each other's shoulders but then Cho Jae Hyun came up to us by saying: "Take one with me too". That's why we took this picture on that day. I really didn't think that an incident like that would occur after taking this picture.

Q. I know it might be hard but can you tell us about what happened?
  • I remember it as being around 2 in the afternoon. He told me he'll give me acting lessons outside because there were many people using the waiting room. I followed him because I was thankful, we talked down the hallway and I think we also went up and down the stairs. At the time, there was a men's bathroom that was under construction. During the moment where I thought, 'Is he going to give me acting lessons here?', he sexually assaulted me inside that bathroom.

Q. Is that possible to happen at a broadcast station's bathroom?
  • Because it was under construction, there weren't any people. Cho Jae Hyun said, "It's alright, right?" while he pressed down on my body with his hand. I was going to say, "No, it's not alright" while trying to get out.

Q. Did you not scream or try to resist?
  • Of course I screamed. Cho Jae Hyun covered my mouth. What I remember is that after he finished, he said to me, "That was good, right?" I'm not sure how I returned back to the waiting room. I just absent-mindedly went into the waiting room.

Q. Were there no witnesses?
  • When I went into the waiting room, my coordinator said: "Where did you go? I was looking for you. Why did your face turn so pale?" I was unable to say anything and just absent-mindedly sat on the sofa. After a while, Cho Jae Hyun came into the waiting room and he placed his face between my thighs and knees (t/n: so their lap) and laid down.

Q. That coordinator might be able to remember that situation.
  • It's been a long time since I went to Japan so I don't know that coordinator's contact information. I have that person's picture and only know her name. I hope they contact me after seeing this article.

Q. Were you unable to request for help from the people around you?
  • I was at a young age of the early 20s, I was really scared and embarrassed. After that incident happened, I only laid down alone in my room. There was a time where I swallowed all of a medicine and I was once told that I hung myself after coming back to conscious. I thought that if I told my dad, he wouldn't just let Cho Jae Hyun go (t/n: as in, the dad would beat him up and what not) and I thought that he wouldn't see me anymore because I thought he would be disappointed in me. After that, Cho Jae Hyun would secretly touch me at the filming set and it was terrible. During those times, I would purposely go near the other senior actors so that I wouldn't be alone as much as I can. One time, the coordinator intervened and said: "Oppa, stop it." After seeing that, middle-aged actor N told me, "Be careful with your body/be careful about your body".

Q. How were you able to reveal that truth?
  • The first person to know was my then Japanese boyfriend who I was living with at that time. We were living together for a long time since Japan and he came to Korea to see me. I no longer wanted to go to the filming set. Before this, I was a bright personality but after the incident, I behaved weirdly on the filming set. I created a fuss saying I didn't want to go to the filming set and that I would jump off the villa. I only told the truth to my boyfriend. During that time, I didn't want to acknowledge what occurred as a "rape" but my boyfriend told me, "what you experienced is rape and I can't forgive him."

Q. Did your boyfriend let your mother know?
  • My mother was working in Japan and came to see me in Korea. I told her I wanted to stop acting and my mother felt like something was out of the ordinary so she asked my boyfriend. My boyfriend told my mother that I experienced something serious because of Cho Jae Hyun and I know that my mother contacted Cho Jae Hyun and immediately went to find him.

Q. To A's mother, at the time - what was Cho Jae Hyun's reaction?
  • A's mother: We met in a room that was a bar in the basement of a building in Gangnam. He was alone. When I said, "You know why I'm here, right?" - he went down on his knees. That's why I said, "Hey, you bastard. Let's go to your wife." After I said that, he begged while saying, "I've committed a sin. My wife is receiving psychological treatment and our relationship is bad to the point where she's tracking me with a GPS."

Q. What about meeting after that?
  • A's mother: After the apology, the place we agreed to meet at was at the office of a famous director. At that place, I remember meeting the director. Cho Jae Hyun, who apologized to me, began trying to persuade me. He said, "Mother, isn't it too much of a waste for A to give up on her acting career? Since A goes around without a manager and only with her coordinator and driver, I think a management/entertainment agency will match well with her. Since there's a lot of scammers in the entertainment industry, my manager can manage A and can make her into a good actor with an acting teacher."

Q. Did you decide on working with Cho Jae Hyun's manager?
  • A's mother: Thinking about the future of my daughter - who's in her early 20s, a daughter's relationship with her father, I thought it was right to quickly grow her dreams and quickly live a normal life instead of creating issues. Although Cho Jae Hyun was untrustworthy, that manager looked nice. The father recently learned about the rape incident in the bathroom. It's because at that time, he only thought a married man did something wrong to our daughter. If he knew about the rape in the bathroom, he wouldn't have chosen that.

Q. Is that why A chose to go along with the mother's reason?
  • Yes. But during those 5 years, I was suffering from really severe depression. They kept placing me with an acting teacher saying that I needed to practice acting but the only audition I partook in was 'Welcome to Dongmakgol'. They told me that a stage on a small theater is good too but I've never stood on a stage.

Q. And your severe depression didn't get better?
  • I did the plastic surgery they ordered me to do, I did the diet but my life stayed the same. But then, my father learned about the drastic choices I made. He got really mad and told me he was disappointed. I couldn't take it anymore so in 2007, I sold the villa and moved to Japan.

Q. I heard you also made a drastic choice recently.
  • For the interview, I checked my medical report but there's dozens of reports about me receiving hospital treatment. They were all because I chose drastic choices. After moving to Japan, I was going through tough times and was really upset because I thought that I was fooled. My father passed away 4 years ago but no one told me so I found out recently. My past is really guilty and it's hard.

Q. What is it that you truly want?
  • I just want to announce it like this so that I can let people know the truth. I can no longer get married and because I took so many medications, my body can no longer have kids. I don't want money, I want Cho Jae Hyun to know exactly what he did and apologize to me and the other victims.

Q. Cho Jae Hyun's reps revealed that they're going to sue.
  • I'm not afraid at all. I heard that there's the crime of false accusation in Korea. I'm trusting in that. I'm confident that there's nothing false in what I said. There are going to be people asking why I'm blaming someone else. I'm certain. If there was no Cho Jae Hyun and that incident didn't occur, even if I wasn't an actor, I would've been happy enough.

1. [+14193, -86] Wow ㄷㄷㄷ I have no words ㄷㄷㄷ Seriously, because of a person like this, I'm suspicious of other celebrities and what they do once the camera stops rolling... he's really psycho...

4. [+4792, -73] Are they not going to investigate? Exactly how many more victims need to come out for them to even start acting like they're investigating?

5. [+2507, -67ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Cut it off, that over there (t/n: they're saying cut his dick off)

6. [+1683, -15] Every time they try to refute sexual assault, they say: "It was consensual" ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Now it seems like even married man aren't embarrassed of having sex as long as it's consensual (t/n: they're talking about married men having sex with people who aren't their partners)

1. [+10071, -162] I'm supporting her

2. [+5143, -33] I hope Kim Ki Duk and Cho Jae Hyun both disappear from society

3. [+972, -12] Sex offender... why is he so confident? Did you live happily during the time you came out on TV and movies while putting on a mask? On top of that, while planning a play, this stingy person didn't even use his money! Choi Hwa Jung was casted and the actor paid for the dinner party instead! Your nature/personality was exposed then and there!

4. [+419, -13] Wow... this bastard is really shameless... ㄷㄷ
