[Article Translation] Through the power of VR, a mother reunites with her deceased child on MBC's documentary 'I Met You'

t/n: The VR human documentary ‘I Met You’ is a project where the team incarnates an individual that someone wants to meet the most from their memories and it can bring back warm memories again.

The production team conducted interviews that targeted individuals who were keeping onto that deep longingness. During the interview process, the production team with Jang Ji Sung who lost her daughter Na Yeon. In 2016, Jang Ji Sung sent off her seven-year-old daughter Na Yeon to heaven.

Jang Ji Sung said that if she was able to see Na Yeon again, she would cook her miyeokguk and wants to tell her that she loves her. Right now, her other daughters are young and resemble Na Yeon so she can easily remember her. But as time passes and her memories diminish, she’s scared that she will forget about Na Yeon.

In order for Na Yeon and her mother to meet, the project worked with the country’s top VR designer. For the past eight months, they analyzed videos that showed Na Yeon when she alive and analyzed her actions, voice, and the way she talks. Through the techniques of motion caption, they made it feel real and the meeting between Na Yeon and her mother came to life.

Jang Ji Sung was full of nervousness when she came to meet up with the MBC production team. After putting on the equipment, she brought up her longingness and she said, “Where are you, I want to touch you” as she was looking for the VR-incarnated Na Yeon. While seeing this occur, the other family members and the production team shouldn’t stop their tears. The mother’s shaky hand movements was filled with love and longingness.

Na Yeon and her mother, who dreamed about meeting, had a birthday party together. Na Yeon said, “I wish mom didn’t cry” as she made her wish and Jang Ji Sung promised, “Mom will love you more rather than yearn for you.” It was a short meeting but Jang Ji Sung was able to change her last memories with Na Yeon to a happy one.

1. [+3152 / -11] In order for the child’s parents to not get hurt by the huge attention they’re receiving, be careful about giving out awkward comfort and refrain from saying things like, “Because of you, I hugged my child” since words like that can also be hurtful.
↪ [+95 / -0] I agree with this idea.
↪ [+336 / -0] That's right.. If you look at the YouTube comments, there are comments saying things like they enjoyed watching the video and that they're glad to have their child, they (the parent) was crying so their child hugged them from the back, there's comments that people left without thinking it through.. ㅜ Of course, they must have not had bad intentions but from Na Yeon's mother's perspective, she'll feel the emptiness of Na Yeon's existence and I think it'll be sadder.

2. [+1241 / -12] Just reading the article is sad - it's virtual reality but who knew state-of-the-art technology could comfort a person, it's somewhat really moving

3. [+943 / -4] I watched this by chance on YouTube at dawn and my eyes were so swollen in the morning because I cried so much, the grief of losing your child, how can you even describe that....

4. [+922 / -9] I was a bit sad that she wasn't able to have a chat with the child in VR and only ask questions that were already set but I hope that even through this, the mother's heart was a bit healed...

5. [+407 / -2] If it remained as good memories and a good time then I think that's the most important

I was watching clips of this on my way to work and I started crying

[Article Translation] Bullies order over 30 servings of sweet and sour chicken to victim's home

t/n: A post titled 'Bullies ordered 330,000 won (as of 12/26 - that's $284.54) worth of sweet and sour chicken to prank the victim' is receiving heat on the internet during Christmas. It's an incident the business owner decided to reveal after they heard about the victim's situation but many people are angered.

According to a sweet and sour chicken restaurant at Budang in the Gyeongi province, the day before the 25th, the restaurant received an order for 30 servings of sweet and sour chicken to be delivered to one household. Unlike usual, they called the orderer to confirm the order but the person on the other end said, "We did make the order". Instead they called the restaurant back and said, "We're going to have a lot of people over and eat it together so we want to order more and make the order so that it comes out to 300,000 won." They didn't have any other suspicions because it was Christmas Eve.

But the woman they met when they went to make the delivery said, "We didn't order it." But her expression turned gloomy when she saw that the special instructions said, 'Please say that her son John Doe ordered it.' The woman said, "My son is being bullied right now but it looks like the bullies ordered it as a prank." She made the entire payment for the order so that it doesn't inconvenience the restaurant and because they couldn't eat all of the food, she asked for only a portion of it and asked for them to take the rest back.

The receipt for the order. In the special instructions for the delivery, it says: Please say that their son [blurred out] ordered it.

With a heavy heart, the business owner decided to post about this situation to a forum/community that they're active on, 'Clien'. The owner wrote that they will give out the sweet and sour chicken for free, the one that the victim's mother did not accept. They also wrote that they would like to help the victim and asked for help on how they can support them.

Afterwards, with the advice of many of the commenters, the business owner cancelled the entire payment on the mother's credit card and they decided to sue the people who made the order because of obstruction/interference with business.

This post spread to many communities/forums. Many people thanked the business owner for not letting this behavior slide. The business owner revealed the side of the victim by writing, "After speaking with the victim's mother on the phone, the victim is 20 years old and the bullies are 21 and 24 years old, they're not minors. They got to know each other in high school and they've been bullying him up until now." The victim's side speculated that the perpetrators did this in retaliation because before this, there was an incident where the perpetrators opened a cellphone account under the victim's name and extorted millions of won and they (the victim's side) was going to report them.

The business owner wrote, "There are a lot of people who are worried that this might harm the business but I hope more people learn about this so that the perpetrators can get proper punishment."

1. [+20057 / -21] The fact that the perpetrators are adults who are 21 years old and 24 years old is more legendary...;; For the Earth, these perpetrator bastards need to just die....

2. [+8856 / -31] Please, please make sure that they get punished! I'm sincerely supporting it

3. [+6156 / -34] Now that they are adults, they can go to jail

4. [+3869 / -24] Sue them and teach them that life isn't a joke... They'll come to their senses after they get a criminal record and they screw over their life, guys like that never reflect... because starting from their personality is wrong

5. [+3063 / -159] I wish they would revive the Samchung re-education camp (t/n: here's a Wiki article about the Samchung re-education camp)

6. [+2516 / -6] Imagine how the mother felt having to see her child being ridiculed and wondering how to pay off the 330,000 won worth of the sweet and sour chicken that they sent over? The perpetrator bastards, with that start of this incident, I'm cursing you guys so that you guys live the most miserable life.

7. [+1124 / -3] The sweet and sour chicken owner did a really good job

F*ck bullies
Embarrassing how they are grown ass adults and they're still doing this shit....

Korean college student faces charges for boyfriend's suicide

t/n: The girl is a former student of Boston College named Inyoung You. The victim is Alexander Urtula, who also attended Boston College, but he committed suicide two hours before his graduation. Inyoung You is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter. She's currently back in Korea and authorities are hoping for her to voluntarily return to the states.

You can read about this case here - A (NBC News) and B (NBC News).

1. [+1734 / -5] I hope she gets extradited and receives punishment.

2. [+534 / -14] If she sent 47,000 texts in a year then how many texts did she send a day?? Is she sane??
↪ [+81 / -1] 47,000 texts in two months, 23,500 texts in a month, around 800 texts in a day
↪ [+22 / -0] She's the devil.
↪ [+28 / -0] She sent that many texts in two months! They dated for one year and a half.

3. [+413 / -8] She's a more cruel b*tch than st*bbing him to d*eath! Don't ever come out~ I'm certain a second victim is going to come out

4. [+323 / -32] If this was Korea, there probably wouldn't have been an issue through femi-buffs (t/n: femi-buff appears to be a derogatory term for followers of feminism)

5. [+131 / -0] They revealed her face on CNN but they blurred her face again... As expected, South Korea is the heaven for perpetrator's human rights. This is a case that's suggesting that it's possible that you can k*ll a person through words and not a weapon. While we're at it, I hope people who spam the members of the National Assembly that they don't like... and people who coordinate hate comments on people's social media accounts reflect! (t/n: There was another comment above this but I found it really disrespectful towards the victim so I chose not to translate it)

Asiana Airlines makes an emergency landing to save an 8-year-old passenger

t/n: An Asiana Airlines flight bound from New York to Seoul last month made an emergency landing when an 8-year-old passenger suddenly fell ill, according to the air carrier on Tuesday. The decision allowed for the fast transportation and treatment of the girl, who has since recovered.

According to Asiana, the passenger, identified by her surname, Choi, was on flight OZ221 from New York to Incheon Airport for a visit to South Korea with her family. About an hour and 30 minutes into the trip, Choi suddenly developed a high fever and stomachache. Flight attendants immediately started tending to the child and consulted with a doctor aboard the plane, who said the child needed emergency medical attention at a hospital, the airline explained.

They announced the plane’s diversion to the nearby Anchorage airport to the flight of 470 people, seeking their understanding and cooperation for the emergency landing. The Asiana Anchorage ground crew was on standby to rush Choi to a nearby hospital.

In order to execute a safe landing, the plane had to dump 15 tons of jet fuel into the air to lower its weight.

After refueling, the flight set back off from Anchorage and arrived at Incheon Airport about four hours behind schedule.

Upon landing, passengers broke into applause when the pilot broadcast apologies for the inconvenience and thanked them for their cooperation, the airline said.

Days after the incident, the airline said Choi’s father sent a letter thanking those involved, including a picture drawn by the 8-year-old.

“We thank the flight crew, passengers, pilot, and officers of Flight 02221 for making the difficult choice to emergency land and the staff at Anchorage for their rapid treatment of my child,” the letter read. (cr. Korea Herald)

1. [+641, -4] It's quite a heartwarming article, imagine how worried her parents were. Especially the people involved with Asiana Airlines and the passengers, you all are first class citizens. I hope everyone in our country is healthy during this heat wave ^^^

2. [+424, -15] It feels like the press is distributing examples of moving stories, good job!!
↪ [+23, -0] Moving stories like this should be widely spread
↪ [+43, -0] I feel like the original commenter doesn't fly often - this was a very, very big loss (t/n: for the airlines and passengers because they had to make an emergency landing, get rid of jet fuel, and lost time), if they know that they did it out of consideration then I think it's bigger than a moving story

3. [+334, -13] Flying back isn't peanuts but life (t/n: they're taking a jab at Korean Airlines and their nut rage scandal)

4. [+196, -0] This is why people are beautiful~ Thank you to all the beautiful people and I hope you're happy.

5. [+105, -0] I wish there was heartwarming news like this in the world - the world is too messy.

Announcer Jung Woo Young calls out BVLGARI for mislabeling a hanbok as a kimono at their Rome exhibition

1. [+3096, -27] It's small and you might just overlook it but he really did a great job. I'm sending you applause.

2. [+1105, -16] If you only read the title, you might think that the announcer mislabeled it. Put a proper title. Even if you shorten it, it should reflect the subject correctly

3. [+682, -8] You can't help but admire announcer Jung Woo Young's patriotism. Labeling a hanbok as a kimono when they're clearly different. This is a big problem. I'm very proud of announcer Jung Woo Young for being able to catch this mistake with his sharp eyes.

4. [+459, -9] Our country's embassies are busy being hostesses and tour guides.

5. [+208, -4] How can this happen.. It's really frustrating, announcer Jung Woo Young did a good thing

[Partial Article Translation] Netizens hunt down the nice restaurant owner that sent firefighters food to thank them for their service

On the 9th, Haenam Fire Station posted a post on their Facebook page, "A package was delivered to the Haenam Fire Station today". In the picture was the package and a letter that said, "Thank you to the firefighters of Haenam Fire Station who came down all night from the furthest place to fight the Gangwon Province fire". The fire station uploaded the picture by blurring out the sender's name and their restaurant information but they couldn't escape the eyes of the netizens.
Netizens said, "Businesses like these needs to do well where their phones are ringing off the hook" and ended up finding out the restaurant owner's information by looking at the package number and the delivery sticker. Netizens have been uploading proof that they ordered from the restaurant.

The person who sent the package to the fire station was restaurant owner Mr. Kwon. Mr. Kwon revealed that he has been refusing interview requests that have been flooding in. The reason he was turning down interviews was, "The attention needs to go to the firefighters, I didn't do anything big, the attention I'm receiving is burdensome." Mr. Kwon is remaining anonymous.

1. [+3112, -66] Firefighters are... angels that wear orange uniforms... If you receive help from firefighters even once... you can never forget that help..

2. [+2139, -23] I'm really mad.. because.. why do people who are in the National Assembly or politics not have the same mindset as people like this (the restaurant owner).. How is it that they think about how they can come out on TV a bit more and try to get attention by overreacting or by speaking rudely to receive a nomination for next year's general election.. when you can tell that they're corrupted inside.

3. [+799, -19] It's really heartwarming. There's hope in the world. Thank you.

4. [+578, -82] This is definitely something you have to do for people who work hard like that but they haven't done it up until now and the nation has been holding it in and in but they can't represent the nation's thoughts, everything the Liberty Korea Party (t/n: this was the party Park Geun Hye was a part of) does is behave like chinilpas, they need to disappear from this country. Because of this trash party, our country became a mess and they only do good things for North Korea. The Democratic Party of Korea also has issues but I think you need to praise the things they do well. How is it that the major political parties in this country all do bad and if there's an issue, they drop the entire nation and only take care of their own greed.. I'm really worried about what can change in this country from now on.

5. [+432, -13] I'm moved by the hearts of those from Ddangkkeut, Jeonnam, and Haenam. Thank you to the firefighters as well.

Japan's Emperor Akihito steps down from the throne

1. [+1122, -11] I think it would've been good if Shinzo Abe resembled even a bit of the Japanese Emperor's character (t/n: Emperor Akihito has a history of repeatedly expressing remorse over Japan's war crimes)

2. [+449, -45] I hope he comes to Korea after he abdicates... Let go of the heavy baggage you've carried for many years and if you come visit comfortably, I think the Korean people will take care of you preciously...

3. [+360, -7] I'm against Japanese imperialism but I welcome a Japanese emperor like that with great character

4. [+256, -21] I'm not expecting anything special.... If you simply give a heartfelt apology then Koreans will no longer take history and pick at it because Korea people also have affection. Now, let's mend relations between Korea and Japan and hold bully nation China in check and help each other financially in various ways. If the world's exporting countries combine their strengths, then even China can't look down on them

5. [+81, -17] Thank you for your hard work.

What's the point of spreading anti-Korean/Japanese sentiment on your blog?

[Article Translation] Police officer helps a struggling job seeker and a month later, the job seeker repays the officer's kindness

Last month, A (28 years old) was reported by a convenience store for stealing rice balls. After checking CCTV footage, it was revealed that A also stole a piece of cake from that convenience store 5 days ago. At the time, A was preparing for job interviews and said, "Because of hardships in life, I wasn't able to eat a proper meal for the past few days. I was hungry so I went into a convenience store and ended up stealing". The amount of the piece of cake and rice ball A stole was only 4,500 won (roughly $4).

Officer Lee Seung Dong (37) gave A 20,000 won (roughly $17) after hearing A's story and said, "I'm lending this to you to tell you to live honestly". A month later, A visited the police station. During that time, he found a job and earned his first paycheck. He came to the station to pay back Officer Lee and brought drinks as well.

Officer Lee was out of the station due to work and told A on the phone, "I'll only accept your heart" and sent A back. A returned home and posted on the Ilsan Seobu Police Station a post expressing his gratitude to Officer Lee. In his post, A wrote, "I couldn't eat a single proper meal for over a week, I then committed an embarrassing, bad crime. The detective in charge of the case made me feel deep remorse when he said said, "No matter how hard it is, you shouldn't commit a crime." After the interrogation ended, he lent me (who didn't have any earnings) 20,000 won and told me to live honestly. I worked hard for a month to repay that money."

1. [+10881, -46] The person stealing definitely bad but I understand the situation and I'm also thankful the convenience store handled it appropriately and the police officer also did a good deed. It's an article that warms my heart...

2. [+4766, -1038] I'm surprised that there are job seekers who can't eat a proper meal... President Moon Jae In needs to read this article.

3. [+3694, -24] There are people who spend millions of won because it's a birthday party, imagine how hungry he was to eat a meal. I'm tearing up. Young man, stay strong and I hope you live diligently from now on. That police officer is also quite a grateful person. People like him are definitely qualified to be an officer. Dog police, learn from this.

4. [+2952, -14] There are police officers like this but.. there are also officers like those bastards who colluded in the Burning Sun case...

5. [+1028, -14] Office Lee, thank you. A also strengthened his mind and I hope he lives diligently

6. [+558, -1] The convenience store owner who properly dealt with the situation, the police officer who was compassionate, the job seeker who repaid the kindness... All of your hearts are becoming warm, everyone stay strong!!

Fire breaks out at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris

1. [+3044, -35] They must be feeling what we felt when our Namdaemun/Sungnyemun Gate was on fire, right? What a shame ㅠㅠ (t/n: In 2008, the Namdaemun/Sungnyemun Gate caught on fire which ended up completely destroying the 550 year old structure. Initially, people thought it was an accident but the fire was caused by an arsonist. Korea was able to restore it and it re-opened in 2013. You can watch news coverage here - YouTube)

2. [+725, -29] When I was young, I cried so much when I saw on TV the Naksansa, that I went to play at with my friends on the weekends, being destroyed by fire, I understand what they're going through. It's sad like when you lose a family member. And when Namdaemun caught on fire, it was sad and shocking.

3. [+353, -26] Notre-Dame cathedral, the symbol of catholicism, is burning - it's sad

4. [+672, -329] It's the symbol of France, it's quite sad. But still, seeing how the French people aren't saying it's Macron's disaster, they're completely different from our people

5. [+324, -14] ㅠ it's sad - the cathedral, that precious treasure ㅠ
